With four factions to play in Age of Mythology: Retold, figuring out which God to align yourself with can be a challenge. If you can’t figure out which of the gods gives you the best minor gods to help your civilization grow, this Age of Mythology: Retold God tier list can help.

Age of Mythology: Retold Greek God Tier List

The main three Greek gods are Zeus, Hades, and Poseidon. Each of them governs a set of minor gods that can aid your Greek units in their battles, and keep your settlement looking pristine. The following lists show which minor gods in Age of Mythology: Retold under each Major God.

Tier S gods are the best because their God Powers, bonuses, and Myth Units provide overwhelming advantages that can drastically have an effect on the course of a match. Tier S gods usually have God Powers that can devastate the opponent’s infrastructure or army in one cast, while their bonuses and Myth Units are impactful throughout the game, making them strong in both economy and combat.

Artemis is a Tier S God because of her Earthquake God Power, which is one of the most destructive in the game. Earthquake can wipe out an enemy’s base, destroying key buildings and heavily damaging their infrastructure, which can cripple their economy and defense. Additionally, her powerful Myth Unit, the Chimera, is a deadly combatant that can deal massive area-of-effect damage with its flame attack, making her a dominant force in the Mythic Age.

Tier A

Tier A gods are very strong, offering significant advantages that can heavily influence a match, though they lack the overwhelming strength of Tier S gods. They provide powerful God Powers, useful Myth Units, and economic or military bonuses that can shape strategies, but they typically require more timing or tactical precision to fully capitalize on.

Apollo is a Tier A god because of his Underworld Passage God Power, which allows players to create a tunnel between two distant locations, enabling surprise attacks or quick reinforcements. This power is very fun, and can help with fun strategies like relocating an army to an undefended enemy base or escaping a bad situation.

Tier B

Tier B gods are solid choices that offer useful, but less powerful, abilities compared to Tier S and A gods. They can provide helpful boosts or tactical advantages, but their God Powers and bonuses usually require specific conditions or careful planning to have a significant effect.

Athena is a Tier B god primarily because of her Restoration God Power, which heals units and repairs buildings. While this ability can be helpful in reinforcing an army or shoring up defenses, it lacks the explosive or game-altering potential of higher-tier powers like Earthquake or Underworld Passage. Restoration shines in drawn-out battles or sieges but requires precise timing to maximize its utility.

Tier C

Tier C gods provide situational advantages that are generally weaker compared to higher-tier gods. Their abilities may be useful in niche circumstances, but they lack the consistent power seen in higher tiers. Choosing a Tier C god often means opting for a specific strategic playstyle, but they won’t drastically affect the overall flow of the game.

Hermes is a Tier C god because his Ceasefire God Power, while situationally useful, doesn’t provide the same offensive or defensive punch as other god powers. Ceasefire prevents all combat for a short time, which can be helpful for stalling or repositioning, but it doesn’t inflict damage or provide a lasting advantage like Earthquake or Underworld Passage. It’s more of a delay tactic than anything else.

Tier D

Tier D gods generally offer minimal impact on the game and are considered the least useful. Their abilities tend to be underwhelming or too niche to have a significant influence in most situations.

Ares falls into Tier D because his Pestilence God Power is one of the weakest in Age of Mythology: Retold. Pestilence temporarily disables enemy military buildings, but it only affects a small area and is easily countered by spacing out buildings or building new ones. It doesn’t do direct damage or provide any meaningful long-term advantage, making it an unimpressive choice compared to other offensive or defensive powers.

Osiris exemplifies why a minor god can be placed in Tier S. His God Power, Son of Osiris, transforms the Pharaoh into a demigod, dramatically increasing their effectiveness. This ability is incredibly powerful because it not only enhances the Pharaoh’s combat capabilities but also augments their utility in supporting buildings and units. This transformation can provide a significant advantage in both defense and offense, making the Pharaoh a formidable force.

Tier A

Nephtys is a prime example of why a minor god can be placed in Tier A. Her God Power, Ancestors, calls upon ancestral soldiers, which provides a strong boost to the player’s army by summoning additional units to the battlefield. This ability is highly effective for reinforcing an army and gaining a numerical advantage in crucial moments. While not as transformative as a Tier S power, Nephtys’ ability to bolster forces with extra units makes her an invaluable asset.

Tier B

Sekhmet's information in Age of Mythology: Retold.

Tier B gods are recognized for their solid and useful abilities, though they may not offer as much impact as seen in higher tiers. These gods provide practical benefits that can support strategic play and contribute to overall success. Their powers are reliable and can be highly effective in the right context, but they lack the transformative or exceptional qualities that define the top tiers.

Sekhmet exemplifies why a minor god is placed in Tier B. Her God Power, Citadel, transforms a town center into a fortified citadel, offering a significant boost to its defensive capabilities. This ability is valuable for strengthening key defensive positions and can be great for a siege situation. However, while powerful, it is somewhat situational compared to Tier A or S powers.

Tier C

Tier C gods generally lack the strength of higher-tier gods. These gods provide useful but weaker powers that can contribute to your strategy in more limited ways. Their effects are often situational compared to the more dominant options, making them less essential in achieving victory.

Bast serves as an example of a Tier C minor god with her God Power, Eclipse. This power turns day into night, which can temporarily disrupt the enemy’s vision and potentially hinder their ability to mount effective offensives. While this ability can be useful for creating opportunities or stalling an opponent, its effect is relatively minor compared to other powers.

Tier D

Tier D gods have the least effective powers in the game. They provide abilities that generally do not offer significant strategic benefits or may even be situationally weak. Their powers either have limited uses or higher costs.

Anubis, as the only Tier D Egyptian god, is a typical example of a D tier God of his God Power, Plague of Serpents. This power summons a plague of serpents that causes damage to enemy units, but its overall uses are minimal compared to other more powerful minor gods. The serpents also have relatively low health and damage output.

The Norse Pantheon benefits from four major gods, rather than three. Choose from Thor, Odin, Loki, or Freyr (the god of fertility and peace, not Freya from Marvel… though it wouldn’t have made much difference because they’re both fertility gods, and brother and sister in mythology anyway).

Tier A

Forseti is a Tier A god due to his Healing Spring ability, which creates a spring that heals allies over time. This ability provides crucial support by keeping units in fighting condition longer and sustaining them during longer fights. While not as useless as some Tier S abilities, Forseti’s Healing Spring offers significant strategic benefits by maintaining the strength of a player’s army and prolonging their effectiveness in battles.

Tier B

Tier B Norse gods have solid abilities that offer useful advantages but generally fall short of the flexibility seen in higher tiers. These gods provide valuable contributions in specific scenarios or for particular strategies but may lack the overall power or adaptability of Tier A and S gods.

Tyr is a Tier B god due to his Fimbulwinter ability. While Fimbulwinter can create chaos and provide a tactical edge by disrupting enemy formations and adding pressure, its effectiveness is somewhat limited compared to the stronger powers of higher-tier gods. The wolves can also be useful for harassing opponents and creating distractions, but that’s about it.

Tier C

Tier D

Their abilities are often more effective and can help you gain the upper hand over your enemy.

Prometheus’ Valor is an exceptionally powerful ability in Age of Mythology: Retold because it transforms regular human units into hero units, significantly boosting their combat effectiveness and survivability. By converting these ordinary units into heroes, players gain access to enhanced stats, special abilities, and greater resilience.

Tier A

Tier A gods have strong abilities that can be very effective but not as much as Tier S abilities. They offer substantial advantages and are flexible but might not always change the game as dramatically.

Theia’s Hesperides Trees plant special trees on the battlefield that not only heal nearby units and buildings, but also enhance resource collection. As these trees accelerate the rate at which villagers gather wood, they contribute to a stronger and more sustainable economy. Hesperides Trees support a well-rounded strategy, maintaining and building up a player’s strength over time.

Tier B

Tier B gods have solid abilities that are useful but generally less powerful than those in higher tiers. They provide good strategic value but are more situational in their effectiveness.

Oceanus’ Carnivora summons a formidable giant plant that actively attacks and eliminates enemy units. This can help with disrupting enemy movements and strategies by creating a substantial barrier that enemies must navigate or contend with. The giant plant’s ability to target and kill enemy units allows you to easily hinder enemy advances.

Tier C

Tier C gods offer abilities that are less useful than Tier B gods, but not as useless as any gods in D tier when it comes to strategic play. Their powers may not significantly influence the game, but they can still be helpful when the need arises.

Hekate’s Tartarian Gate unleashes monsters from the underworld, adding a powerful offensive force to your army. These monsters can cause substantial damage, but the effectiveness of this ability depends on the timing of its use, and the state of the battlefield. If used at the wrong moment or against opponents who are well-prepared for such threats, it might not have any impact.

Tier D

Tier D gods have abilities that are minimally useful in the game. Whether they don’t help with combat or have no positive effects on your settlement, they’re just not good enough to be in higher tiers.

Leto’s Spider Lair places spider eggs at strategic locations on the map, which hatch into aggressive spiders that can disrupt enemy movements. This is particularly valuable for establishing area control — the spiders can force enemies to change their path and slow their advance. The only difference between Leto and Hekate is the type of monster being summoned, really, but it’s enough that Leto got knocked down to Tier D.
