All Deep Rock Galactic Classes, Explained

Deep Rock Galactic is a first-person shooter in which players go on expeditions to deep mines infested with hostile alien bugs. The game features 1-4 player co-op; therefore, it relies on teamwork and character-assigned roles. I have explained all the character classes in Deep Rock Galactic and their abilities below.

All classes in Deep Rock Galactic

In this game, you play as dwarves with special weapons and gear designed to help you survive and extract minerals in deep enemy territories. There are four types of dwarves or classes of characters you can choose from – Gunner, Scout, Driller and Engineer. Each class has different types of gear but the Pickaxe and High-Intensity Flare are two basic pieces of equipment available to all.

1. Gunner class – Deep Rock Galactic

As the name implies, a Gunner is a front-line soldier who carries heavy weaponry that can effortlessly mow down waves of enemies on the road. This includes a rapid-firing Minigun, a high-damage Revolver and Sticky Grenades. While the Gunner is great at attacking, he’s also the best at providing support thanks to his Shield Generator and Zipline Launcher.

Below are all the tools you can choose while playing Gunner:

  • Primary Weapon
    • Lead Storm Powered Minigun (default): This high-firing weapon has a growth period before which you cannot fire it; but once the shooting starts, you don’t have to worry about reloading for a long time, that is, until the minigun overheats.
    • Thunderhead Heavy Autocannon: The autocannon has a slow rate of fire but its high calibers deal a lot of damage, including burst damage on impact.
    • Hurricane Guided Rocket System: Effective against hordes, use this weapon to fire a barrage of rockets and guide them manually using the laser pointer.
  • Secondary Weapon
    • Bulldog Heavy Revolver (default): Fires high damage bullets but you have to reload after every four rounds.
    • BRT7 Burst Fire Gun: Think of it as a mini-SMG that fires in a three-round burst and is quite powerful.
    • ArmsKore Coil Gun: Charge the shot by holding the fire button and then release it to fire an extremely deadly shot.
  • equipment
    • Shield Generator: Throw this support tool into exciting situations when you are overwhelmed by the monsters. It creates a spherical holographic shield that grants 50 percent damage resistance and keeps enemies away until active.
    • Zipline Launcher: If you find yourself stuck in a complex location, use this gun to shoot a zipline to the position you want to reach.
    • Grenada Grenada: This grenade sticks to the surface you throw it at and explodes shortly afterwards. It is best against a cluster of enemies, especially the large monsters.

2. Scout class – Deep Rock Galactic

Think of Scout as the dexterous dwarf who can get to difficult places to mine minerals and get out of complex situations with ease, all thanks to his Grappling Hook. He also carries a Flare Gun which lights up much better than the regular flares that each character gets. It should be noted that his main weapon, the Deepcore GK2, is not that powerful and I found myself constantly running out of ammo while using it.

Here are all the tools and tools available for Scout:

  • Primary Weapon
    • Deepcore GK2 (default): Although this fully automatic assault rifle is very powerful, it is effective due to the fast reload speed and high rate of fire; just count the ammo.
    • M1000 Classic: Made in memory of the M1 Garand, this is a reliable battle rifle with a single-fire mechanic; however, it enters alternate fire mode when you hold the fire button. The bullets in this mode deal increased damage and have great accuracy but cost two rounds per shot.
    • DRAK-25 Plasma Carbine: Based on an overheat mechanic similar to Gunner’s Minigun, this weapon fires laser rounds at the target.
  • Secondary Weapon
    • Jury-Rigged Boomstick (default): If you think Scout’s primary isn’t that powerful, you can swap to the double-barrelled shotgun when you need high firepower.
    • Zhukov NUK17: a trusty set of dual submachine guns, or you can call them micro-SMGs.
    • Nishanka Boltshark X-80: This crossbow can fire high-impact, recoverable bolts and you can even upgrade it to carry different bolts.
  • equipment
    • Grappling Hook: Use this useful tool to fire a hook that can latch onto surfaces in range and pull you towards it. You can continue to hold the button to stay suspended and connected as long as you want.
    • Flare Gun: Use this to shoot special flares that, unlike the standard ones, last longer, burn brighter and can even stick to vertical surfaces.
    • Inhibitor Field Generator: Creates a sphere that slows enemies trapped inside. Use this opportunity to cut them down or recover if in a sticky situation.

3. Driller class – Deep Rock Galactic

Driller is a mining specialist who brings his Flamethrower into the battlefield. What makes it great at mining is the Power Drill, which can be used to vigorously drill through any surface. His Satchel Charge utility always comes in handy when you want to set a trap for the monsters and blast them to pieces. Driller is good at mining and killing bugs, which is why he is my favorite class in Deep Rock Galactic.

Let’s take a look at the equipment and weapons available for Driller:

  • Primary Weapon
    • CRSPR Flamethrower (default): Burn your enemies with this powerful weapon, but watch out for its evil reach. It is the best weapon to use when you are surrounded by enemies and want to take them out quickly.
    • cryo cannon: If you’re bored of burning the bugs, try freezing them with the Cryo Cannon. It is best used with Driller’s Impact Axe; freeze the aliens first and then kill them using the axe.
    • Corrosive Sludge Pump: Hold the fire button and release it to shoot a ball of toxic waste at the enemies. They take damage over time and slow down, allowing your teammates plenty of time to finish them off.
  • Secondary Weapon
    • Saturday 120 (default): a simple but reliable semi-automatic pistol.
    • Experimental Plasma Charger: EPC is also a semi-automatic pistol, but it fires plasma bolts instead of bullets.
    • Colette Wave Cooker: This weapon emits deadly microwave energy and works on the overheating mechanic so you don’t have to reload as often.
  • equipment
    • Enhanced Power Drills: Use these powerful drilling machines to destroy rocks in your way. What you can do with the pickaxe in a minute can be done in seconds using this tool.
    • Satchel Charge: A C4 charge that you can place on any surface and detonate when ready from a distance. You can rely on this to clear lands and deal explosive damage to the monsters.
    • Impact Axe: Recoverable throwing axes that are very effective against the bugs and can take out the little other with just one hit.

4. Engineer Class – Deep Rock Galactic

If tactical is your thing, you should try the Engineer dwarf. By default, he carries a shotgun and a slingshot, both of which are very powerful weapons. If you want to defend an area from enemies or face an incoming wave, put down the sentry turret to do half the work for you. An engineer also carries the Platform Gun, a very functional tool that you can use to create your own terrain to reach complex locations.

  • Primary Weapon
    • Warthog Car 210 (default): This semi-automatic shotgun comes with six bullets in the chamber and is among the best weapons in the game for close encounters.
    • Stubby Voltaic SMG: a compact SMG with good damage potential and fast reload speed. What makes this weapon special is its electrical capability, which makes the gun so that shots fired have a small chance of electrocuting the target.
    • LOK-1 Smart Rifle: A standard one-shot weapon but when you hold the fire button, it enters a special mode in which you can lock onto targets even from a distance and fire powerful charged bullets.
  • Secondary Weapon
    • Deep core 40mm PGL (default): Fire devastating grenades at hordes and large monsters to eliminate them effortlessly.
    • Breccia knife: This weapon fires plasma blades that travel as horizontal lines and deal damage over time. The plasma can pass not only through enemies but even surfaces to some extent.
    • Frachet diffractor: Send powerful, infinite range of energy, capable of inflicting serious damage on even the largest alien monsters.
  • equipment
    • Platform Gun: Use it to create a small platform out of a special substance that can last forever unless you dig it up or expose it to fire. Build stairs using this and reach places you couldn’t otherwise.
    • LMG Gun Platform: A great support tool that you can place anywhere on the surface and it will help you fight off waves of bugs. It has a limited range and you will need to refill it with ammo when it runs low.
    • LOGGING: Cast this holographic dwarf decoy that pulls in nearby enemies for a while and takes their attention away from you.
