Destiny 2 players love the Pathfinder system but it has one fatal flaw

Destiny 2’s The Final Shape expansion introduced plenty of new mechanics, content, and places to explore for Guardians to sink their teeth into. However, even some of the best systems launched have received criticism for certain negative interactions. Today we look at the Pathfinder system and why the community is bothered by a certain design flaw.

Reddit user Secht02 took to the Destiny subreddit to air his annoyances with the current Pathfinder system. They detail a specific moment that happened recently as it pushes Rangers to “Defeat several Cabal fighters”. As they were doing strikes to pass the time, they realized that many of their teammates immediately left the group due to the current case of not having the Cabal. Of 26 Guardians, they report three who did not leave the group the moment they realized that there was no Cabal to defeat. Consequently, players have to deal with substandard matchmaking, longer queues, and generally low enjoyment from party members constantly leaving.

Commenters in the thread immediately agreed with Secht02’s take on the Pathfinder system, despite believing it to be a positive change to the game as a whole. It has its issues, but the foundation and potential of the system is undeniable, but whether Bungie benefits from it remains to be seen.

Others are not as pleased with the Pathfinder system and find it clunky, difficult to access and almost impossible to complete in certain circumstances. There is a lot of talk about the Crucible in the thread with players begging for the challenges to be rewritten and made easier during PvP.

My friends and I are guilty of dropping a strike that didn’t have a Cabal in our rush to get to the top. It’s an unfortunate occupational hazard and this should be taken into account by Bungie. Players love min/max in MMOs and Destiny 2 is no different – if the node required Vex instead, then players would abandon Cabal strikes just as easily.

Additionally, this problem has an easy fix and can even be warmed into the game in a single afternoon if Bungie is pressed enough. Simply changing “Defeat multiple Cabal fighters” to “Defeat enemy fighters, Cabal gives more progress” would be such an effective solution to the problem. However, the problems of Crucible and the emphasis on start-up effects need to be addressed.

I enjoy the Pathfinder system and it does a great job of pushing me to try new weapons and builds (like the Thundercrash Titan for example), or even explore places I’ve neglected. While I appreciate this system, it still has its flaws and I hope Bungie takes another look at it so the issues and hiccups are resolved soon.
