Does it matter which Crabling you choose to ascend into Crab God?

In the depths of the ocean, Crab God has the player make a pretty serious decision early in the game about who will ascend as, well, the Crab God himself. You might be wondering what choice to make as your Crablings look at you with their adoring eyes, so here’s our handy guide that answers whether it matters which Crabling you choose to level up in Crab God.

Which Crabling should you choose to ascend in Crab God?

When you start a new run in Crab God, you’re first tasked with hatching your new Crablings, and each one has its own name and starts at Level 1. Next, you’re asked, “Who’s going to level up?” and you must choose one of your Crablings as the next heir after the current Crab God passes away. However, it’s not exactly clear whether it matters which Crabling you decide to put in the Temple of the Tide.

After our multiple playthroughs on different routes across the ocean, it’s safe to say that it doesn’t matter which Crabling you choose to ascend into Crab God. Their stats do not change as a result or affect anything, and the outcome of the game does not differ in any way. In other words, when you choose Crabling and they are placed in a cocoon inside the Temple, they are effectively removed from active gameplay, so they take no actions that have any bearing on progress or the ending.

Your main task as a player is simply to protect them and the Temple while your active Crablings migrate further into the ocean. Therefore, leveling your list of active Crablings as much as possible and gifting them with powerful Traits to fend off the terrors of the deep until the heir is ready to hatch is actually what matters.
