Fields of Mistria Walkthrough Guide

Released on August 5, 2024, Fields of Mistria is currently in Early Access on Steam. As another Stardew Valley-like game, you can enjoy building your own farm in Fields of Mistria with one prominent twist: here, magic lies. Enjoy reading this Fields of Mistria walkthrough, where you’ll learn how to upgrade all your tools and the areas around town that need to be fixed up.

When you start the game, you find out about a town called Mistria, which is struggling. There is a farm that has lots of potential but is in need of restoration, and will be offered to any adventurer willing to take it – that’s you! You aren’t only responsible for the farm, though. As a player, your task is to help rebuild the town after the recent earthquake, while strange magical occurrences make your life a bit more adventurous.

Best perks to get first in Fields of Mistria

The skill perks in Fields of Mistria are split into nine categories:

  • Archaeology
  • Blacksmithing
  • Combat
  • Cooking
  • Farming
  • Fishing
  • Mining
  • Ranching
  • Woodcrafting

In Fields of Mistria, you can level up your skills by performing tasks that are related to each skill. For example, you gain experience in your farming skill by tending to crops. While increasing your skill level doesn’t offer immediate benefits, it does unlock access to more recipes (and other perks later down the line). As you complete activities, you’ll earn small amounts of Essence. This currency can be used to buy skill perks, which are permanent buffs for your skills.

You can see your skill level in the bottom left corner of the default menu. Clicking this part of the menu will show you a detailed meter of your progress in each of the nine skill categories.

When you reach Level 15 and Level 30 in a skill, you can unlock a set of skill perks that you can buy with the Essence that you’ve gathered. Level 30 is the maximum skill level in the Early Access version of Fields of Mistria.

Some crafting disciplines require a minimum skill level to create specific recipes. For example, getting to Level 15 and Level 30 in the cooking skill will unlock better Kitchens at the Carpenter’s Shop for you to buy.

How to expand your backpack

The first bag upgrade in the General Store of Fields of Mistria.
Screenshot by Pro Game Guides

When you first start the game, you’ll notice that your bag has a limited number of slots, which can be pretty annoying.

You can purchase a bag expansion at the General Store. Just scroll over to the tools expansions section to find the backpack expansion. The expansion costs 1000 Tessarae and will double your available item slots. It will also add tab “B” to your hotbar.

After completing the General Store upgrade quest, you’ll be able to purchase a second upgrade for 2000 Tessarae. It will also add tab “C” to your hotbar.

These are only bag expansions available. Consider crafting a few storage crates to keep your supplies organized on the farm and in your home.

How to open the mines

The letter to start the quest that opens the mines in Fields of Mistria.
Screenshot by Pro Game Guides

You’ll get a letter from Eiland titled “Reopening the Mines” on Day Six. He wants you to meet him and Errol at the museum to chat. Errol has doubts because he’s heard strange noises coming from the mines, but he’s open to reopening them if Mistria’s renown reaches the Stone Rank.

To increase your town rank, you can do the following tasks:

  • Complete villager requests.
  • Donate items you find to the museum.
  • Work on your farm (plant and harvest crops, etc.).

It’s a bit time-consuming, and you can expect to reach Day 14 or so before you get there. Once you reach Stone Rank, you’ll get another letter asking you to meet Errol and Eiland at the entrance to the Mine, which is by the museum.

You’ll have a quick cutscene about reopening the mines, and this will unlock the mines for you to explore. Finally, you’ll be able to do some actual mining instead of breaking rocks, and use your sword on something other than grass.

Can you marry villagers in Fields of Mistria?

Adeline's profile in Fields of Mistria.
Screenshot by Pro Game Guides

For all you romantics out there, you’ll be happy to know that Fields of Mistria has 12 marriage candidates for you to get to know. Only 10 of the 12 characters that you can romance are available in Early Access. These characters are romance options:

  • Adeline
  • Balor
  • Celine
  • Eiland
  • Hayden
  • Juniper
  • March
  • Reina
  • Ryis
  • Valen

The final two romanceable characters haven’t been revealed (they’re currently blacked-out portraits with question marks on the Steam page for Fields of Mistria).

You won’t be able to reach the level of friendship needed to romance anyone in the Early Access version of Fields of Mistria. The devs have made the decision to allow players to advance their friendships up to the fourth heart, but there are 10 overall.

How to unlock the bathhouse

The Bathhouse in Fields of Mistria.
Screenshot by Pro Game Guides

To gain access to the bathhouse and get five free baths, head to the town quest board and select the Stinky Stamina Potion quest.

For this quest, you need to bring Juniper one lilac, which you can find by the chicken statue next to Hayden’s farm.

Once you give the lilac to Juniper, you’ll go through a bit of a weird potion test and get a free bath to heal up afterward. Juniper will reward you with a few more complimentary baths to make up for your time, even though she didn’t get the results she wanted.

How to repair the bridge

Crossing the broken bridge in Fields of Mistria.
Screenshot by Pro Game Guides

During the opening cutscene, you’ll notice that the bridge out of Mistria is… kind of broken. Who am I kidding? It’s in three large pieces with a few other pieces floating around. This makes it hard for merchants to visit, and it’s not exactly the most inviting entrance to the town.

As you continue to play, Adeline will eventually send you a letter inviting you to meet her near the bridge. Head over to the right side of Mistria, where you’ll join the villagers in a quick cutscene. They’ll enlist your help to gather materials to restore the bridge to its former glory.

You will need to use your tools to collect 60 wood and 60 stone. Drop these into the collection box by the broken bridge until you have enough of each.

Once you’ve done that, talk to Adeline. This action will trigger a cutscene where the bridge finally gets repaired, and a new Saturday market will be available every weekend afterward as traders flock to the town.

Trailer, release date, platforms

There isn’t a set date for the full release of Fields of Mistria yet. As per the Early Access information box on Field of Mistria’s Steam page, “Fields of Mistria is currently planned to be in EA for roughly one year with regular content updates planned along the way.”

Going by this response, it’s possible that we could see the full release of Fields of Mistria in early August 2025.

At the moment, Fields of Mistria is only available on Steam. However, it is also Steam Deck compatible.

Is Fields of Mistria coming to Switch?

The devs at NPC Studio have said that they will “evaluate potential ports at a future time,” so there are no plans to expand past a Steam release for now.

Does Fields of Mistria have controller support?

Yes, Fields of Mistria does have controller support. Though, having played it via keyboard and mouse, there aren’t any limitations there. The controls aren’t clunky and I don’t feel the need to switch to my controller.

That said, if you use a controller for comfort or accessibility, you’ll be happy to know that Fields of Mistria supports Xbox controllers, DualShock controllers (USB only), and DualSense controllers.

How to unlock magic and get more spells in Fields of Mistria

How to unlock magic

To get your first spell in Fields of Mistria and unlock your magical abilities, you need to make your way to the mine. If you haven’t unlocked the mine yet, head over to my Fields of Mistria Walkthrough and Guide to find out how. Opening the mines takes a little effort, but I’m sure you’ll finish the request in no time at all!

Once you’ve opened the mine, make your way down to floor 10 by smashing rocks open with your pickaxe until you find each set of ladders. Every five floors, you’ll gain access to the elevator, so don’t worry about missing anything.

After you get to floor 10, head back to your home. Or, like me, you can keep going and faint on floor 19.

Now that you have access to your Mana and your first spell, it’s time to tackle the mine again. Make your way down to floor 20 and you’ll find a strange room with a tablet and a door blocking you from getting any further into the mine.

The game gets a little hand-holdy here. Go and speak to Eiland (who is super enthusiastic about the whole thing), and you’ll end up going with him to talk to Juniper.

Juniper is able to translate the text on the tablet, which tells you what offerings to make to get past the door.

You’ll need the following items:

  • A Lantern Moth
  • A Ruby
  • A Stone Loach
  • An Upper Mines Mushroom

All of these can be found in the first 20 floors of the mine (also known as The Upper Mines”.

Take these items to the room on floor 20, and place them as offerings in the four clawed hands. Once the door opens, Caldarus will give you your second spell – Summon Rain – as a reward for getting into the Tide Caverns (this area encompasses floor 21 to floor 40 of the mine).

A door like this appears every 20 floors, and opening the door will give you a new spell each time.
