Fu Xuan vs Aventurine Which Conservation unit should you pull in Honkai Star Rail?

It is practically a requirement, in Honkai: Star Rail, to have some units in your roster of characters that can keep your team(s). With the introduction of Adventurine, the inevitable question of whether you should pull him or Fu Xuan is one I can answer for you here.

Should you pull for Fu Xuan or Aventurine in Honkai Star Rail?

The truest answer to this potentially deceptive question is quite simplistic as it depends on the status of your Honkai: Star Rail account. You need two teams to complete all of Honkai: Star Rail's content, which means you also need two limited Abundance or Conservation characters. If you already have two of either category, you should not draw for either, as your Star Jades are better used elsewhere. If you're considering pulling for Fu Xuan or Aventurine regardless of your account status, then the answer is a bit more complicated.

You should pull Aventurine and Fu Xuan if you don't already have at least two supporting characters in your account. You should pull for Fu Xuan se you favor her secondary Harmoni-like lovers. You should pull for Aventruine if you want a supporter that is capable of eating out solid, secondary damage.

Both characters are great for supporting your team, no matter what team they are placed on, and they are quite competitive at that job. However, they have nuances where you might want to pull for one or the other. Let me break it down for you.

How does Fu Xuan support your team?

Fu Xuan protects your team by providing the sand, a Matrix of Presience that massively reduces the damage your team takes. A portion of the damage that goes through the damage reduction is then redirected to Fu Xuan himself, making your entire team very durable as long as said sand remains active. This is an incredibly powerful sand and that's why Fu Xuan is so sought after by almost every team.

However, it has a major weakness. Large amounts of damage can very easily overwhelm Fu Xuan when that damage is taken by multiple members of her team. In difficult content like Simulated Universe: Golden Gears, it's not uncommon to see Fu Xuan get killed in a single attack, due to absorbing too much damage. However, in content like Forgotten Hall and Pure Fiction, she is more than enough to support your teams.

How does Aventruine support your team?

Aventurine protects your team by providing large self-recovery shields at a constant rate. When he uses his Skill, he applies an additional application of his shield to your entire team at once. He also applies another application of his shield each time he activates his Next attack. Shields in Honkai: Star Rail acts as effective health, meaning he effectively “heals” your team every time one of his shield applications is activated. This provides an extremely convenient, agile, inexpensive method of supporting your team.

However, just like with Fu Xuan, there is a major weakness. Aventurine shields provide effective health, not actual healing, so if a teammate takes health damage, that damage is permanent. Additionally, if enemies take damage that exceeds the total effective health of his shield, then your team will eventually be damaged if the fight goes on too long. Fu Xuan can provide a small amount of healing to her team, while Aventurine cannot, which is something you should consider. Fortunately, also like Fu Xuan, situations where damage of this caliber can occur are rare and are generally only found in advanced Simulation Universe stages.
