Growing crops is an enjoyable and profitable hobby in Lightyear Frontier. It turns out that your good neighbor Ulf can help you grow some unique and rare crops, and if you’re wondering how it works, here’s our handy guide on how to grow all the rare crops in Lightyear Frontier.
How to unlock rare crops in Lightyear Frontier
To grow rare crops in Lightyear Frontier you must first establish contact with Ulfa friendly botanist from another local planet who asks to start a research project on the plant life of the Frontier with you. Once you did built an Outpost for him somewhere in your farm, he will arrive on his ship and you can start his quest line.
The main goal of Ulf’s quest line is to successfully produce mutated (rare) versions of all crops currently found on the planet. To do this, you must first build a Seed Splicer (seen above) at his Outpost, who will allows you to combine the seeds of regular crops found around the Border into ones that can potentially grow mutated versions of those crops.. As long as you have discovered and grown a certain type of regular crop at least once, you can splice it with Ulf’s Seed Splicer.
Remember, if you are short of seeds you need for splicing, you can also buy them from Lolaif she has them available. Otherwise, you have to venture around the map to collect them with your Mech.
Once you have placed enough seeds in the Seeder to produce a few spliced seeds, sow them into any available crop you have and water them daily, just as you would any other crop. After a few days, your crops will be fully grown and at least one of them should look noticeably different from the others (size and color). This indicates a mutated cropwhich you can then to provide Ulf for his research and progression of his search line.
The goal is to give Ulf at least one of each type of possible mutated crop, and the rest you can sell to Lola to help boost your finances significantly.

Below we have listed all the current rare (mutated) crops in Lightyear Frontier, how to grow them and their base prices. You will know that a crop is mutated by the difference in color and size (as seen above).
Also be aware that even when you sow spliced seeds and tend them as regular crops, only a small percentage of them will actually yield mutated crops. Therefore, the more spliced seeds you sow, the better the chances of getting a large amount of rare crops to supply to Ulf for his research and also to sell to Lola for a VERY large profit.
