How to make more Coal in Frostpunk 2

When it comes to staying warm in Frostpunk 2, knowing how to utilize your fuel sources is undeniably important to survival. While it may not be the end game, Coal is one of the most resilient and versatile fuel types in the game. Here’s how to make more Coal in Frostpunk 2.

The first method to get Carbon in Frostpunk 2 is to to extract it from the Shallow Coal Seams near the central district of New London. As the city grows, however, you will find yourself needing more and more to meet demand. To help balance that demand you must find other methods to produce more Coal that Extractive Districts cannot always provide by themselves.

Explore Dust Coal Mine

First, to make the most of those Shallow Coal Seams, after building your Extraction Districts, you should explore the Dust Coal Mine (the Blasting Coal Mine will deplete deposits faster, and you want them to last, regardless of Faction favor) and build at least one. This will help extend the life of those Coal Seams, even well into Chapter 3 after the initial Whiteout storm.

Research Coal Regeneration Plant

Then, once you’ve started extracting the Wood Materials of the Vast Frozen Forests in the southern sections of New London, you must explore the Idea for the Charcoal Regenerative plantwhich will help to use those Wood Materials to produce Charcoal.

Although it performs the same basic function, we don’t necessarily recommend the Pyrolytic Coal Plant because it doesn’t produce as much Coal output and requires more Heat Demand (something you should minimize wherever possible). Once you have researched that Idea, build your Carbon Regeneration Plant in one of yours Extractive Districts to put it into practice. The more of them you can build, the higher your Coal stockpile will grow.

Find Coal in Frostlands

Don’t forget, you can also further boost those Coal Stores with scouting the Frozenlands and finding outposts in various regions with sources of Coal ripe for the taking. Use your available Frostlander teams to set up a supply line that will last you a considerable amount of time until the source eventually runs dry.

Ditch Coal and switch to Oil

Remember that Coal is not that important in the later stages of the game, so look to fill your reserves and focus on finding Oil. As soon as you establish a colony with Oil Reserves, you will no longer need Coal. You can use excess coal reserves to help colonies that are still using them. Don’t forget to shut down coal mines in Frostlands when you switch to Oil to have more people for Frostland exploration.
