Live-service games like Call of Duty constantly release paid cosmetics like operator skins and weapon sketches; these microtransactions make up a large part of the income of the game. Since CoD is a military shooter, players have debated the importance of some of these flashy skins in MW3.
While Modern Warfare 3 is getting some basic character skins with military-inspired clothing, you must have noticed a massive increase in extravagant skins like the one shared by user animal-danimal in the Reddit thread above. The uploader wonders when the developers will stop releasing such “terrible” designs (the one in question here is the new CODFish skin in CoD).
Despite being heavily inspired by realism and military combat, Call of Duty is an arcade shooter with a majority casual player base. Xever_141 astutely commented that since people tend to buy these skins, they keep dropping such packages in the store. I agree with this take and so do many other people.
Others say that if a player likes the skin, it’s their choice and no one is stopping them from buying it, also noting that anyone wearing this shiny skin will stand out and be seen from afar. This makes using the skin disadvantageous, at least for large-scale modes like Warzone. But people will still equip it because, as said before, most players in the game are casual and don’t care much about these elements.
Meanwhile, still others bemoan the cost of such designs—2,400 CoD Points for one operator skin, two weapon sketches, and some other minor cosmetics is a bit steep, especially since there have always been bundles with much better value at the same price.
