Once Human Deviant Guide – How deviance works, how to keep deviants happy, and more!

Once Human is a game that has a little something for everyone looking for a new MMORPG to play. If you're, for example, a fan of collectible games like Palworld, then Once Human also has you covered with its strangely complex Deviant system.

What are Deviants in Once Human?

As implied moments ago, Deviants are Once Human's answer to players who want to invest their time in collecting creatures. Deviants are abnormal creatures with special abilities and perform unique tasks for your benefit. They come in many shapes and sizes, and each one is very unique compared to its peers. You start Once Human with a butterfly-like Deviant that attacks your enemies when deployed, but as you progress through the game, you'll no doubt collect more to use.

What is special about Deviants is that they must be personally maintained to remain usable and effective for your cause similar to how you would in Palword. To that end, you will need to understand the core of the system to make great use of these Deviants.

How to Summon a Deviant in Once Human

The first Deviant you will get is the Butterfly's messenger, and it is only obtained by following the tutorial prologue quest line. This Deviant is pretty basic compared to later ones, as it's core function is to damage enemies. However, it won't do anything if you don't call it from its Independent Security Unit first, which you will need to build in your base first.

Build an Independent Security Unitopen your Build a Menuchoose Facilities then navigate to the functional tab From here, look under the Special categories and select the Independent Security Unit in the list of buildings.

To build it, you will need some common materials.

  • 20 x Metal Scraps – Looted from the surroundings, or obtained by disassembling junk in the Disassembler.
  • 15 x Copper Ingots Created with the Furnace
  • 10 x Glass – Created with the Furnace

When you have these materials, place the Independent Security Unit in your base, at the location of your choice. now, interact with the structure. A simple menu will open allowing you to choose which Deviant you want to put in the unit. For this example, I will continue to use the Butterfly's messenger, so I recommend that you choose the one to put in the unit.

When a Deviant is healthy and well in their unit, you can now use it for summoning. Interact with the Independent Security Unit that has your Butterfly's Envoy and select the Sync to Cradle option at the bottom right.

Syncing a Deviant to your Cradle (the pack on your back) allows you to summon the Deviant at will. Press and hold the Summon a Deviant button on your control layout (“E” is the default for keyboard). This will open a power window with a few options.

The Deviant you use will determine what these options do, as they represent the special abilities available to it. In the case of the Butterfly's messenger, you can either choose to summon it to the field to automatically attack nearby enemies, or choose to cast it instead for additional effects. Make sure you read all about the mechanics each Deviant has access to before summoning.

How to summon a non-combat Deviant

Not all Deviants are combat-oriented. Instead, some focus all their energy on completing mundane but useful tasks around your base. These Deviants are typically not summoned by you. In fact, you don't even need to sync with them for them to work.

For example, 'The Digby Boy' is a Deviant who has no combat function. His only purpose is my ore around your base. While assigned to an independent Secure Unit, The Digby Boy will perform this function automatically, calling himself in as needed. However, all Deviants, regardless of type, will only work if they are properly maintained.

How to keep Deviants happy in Once Human

A Summoned Deviant only stays out for so long. This duration is usually determined by their Deviation Powerwhich is headed by 100. Deviation Power is like a Deviant's stamina bar. Once it is at zero, it can no longer be invoked and, instead, will return to the Independent Security Unit it was assigned to.

Deviant in its unit is in a sleeping state, which means it rests to restore its Deviation Power. This process is incredibly slow by nature, but you can directly affect the rate at which Deviant Power is restored by affecting the Deviant. mood with proper care.

Every Deviation in Once Human has a Mood Bar that ends at 100, like Deviant Power. Mood determines how effective a Deviant is at their various tasks. A higher Mood Bar means a stronger, more effective Deviant. A Deviant's mood is determined by the care you give it, and each Deviant has a different set of needs that you should take into account to make sure it is as happy as it can be. You can see these needs by examining Deviant in its unit and looking at the bottom left part of the menu.

Note that The Digby Boy is happier when music is playing near the unit it is stored in and toys are also being played around it. Additionally, it enjoys getting warm and wants to attach a 5W Power source. With all these concerns in mind, its Mood bar will recover significantly faster than normal.

One more use for Deviant's Mood is that you use it for immediately refill Deviant Power. By clicking on the Refill button in the Independent Secure Unit menu, you can convert a Deviant's Mood into Deviant Power, allowing it to come back up and running instantly.

This is very useful for situations where you need to use Deviant's unique ability, regardless of how effective it is.

What are Deviant Traits in Ever Human?

The early Deviants you'll get in Once Human will come with one or two special abilities it can use. However, as you progress, you will find Deviants who have Deviant Traits: additional mechanics that change how the Deviant works. These are obtained as randomly as you would find Deviants, and often they are quite simple in how they affect it. The rule of thumb: the more Deviant Traits a Deviant has, the more special abilities a Deviant will have.

How to get more Deviants in Once Human

There are two main ways to get new Deviants. The first way is complete searches. Some Deviants will automatically come into your clutches just by completing main story missions and side quests. These Deviants are usually bog standards, but they'll get you started.

The other method of obtaining Deviants is to find and loot them in the game world. Sometimes you can come across one randomly while looting a safe, while others you'll get by completing puzzles. Also, some may land in your possession if you defeat bosses. Currently, the origins of Deviants remain shrouded in mystery. However, this should help you discover new ones until exact locations can be pinpointed. When that information comes to light, I'll update this guide for you so you don't have to search the internet for it.
