Over 100,000 people are playing banana clicker game on Steam right now

Have you ever wanted to just click a banana repeatedly on your screen and do nothing else? Well, good news! Banana is here to let you do just that, and 100,000 people are busy clicking the iconic yellow fruit… for some reason.

This free-to-play clicker has grabbed the top 10 spot on the list of most active Steam games at the time of writing. It is sandwiched between GTA V and Rust (an impressive competition) in the #7 spot at the time of writing. I can’t help but wonder; why is it so popular?

The truth is, I have no idea. It seems as if a skin drops in the game every few hours, and this skin can be sold on the marketplace for a few cents. It looks like you could earn 0.01 EUR every three hours.

That’s hardly a living wage. So again we have to ask the question why this game has surpassed GTA V in current players? It’s not because it’s free – there are plenty of free games on Steam that would die for such a high spot on the charts.

Could the answer be hidden among the reviews? Currently, the reviews (more than 4000 of them) are very positive. One user, Nu, claimed that the game became a lifeline for him. Another user, SlumCamera, recommended the game even though the banana left his screen and killed his family. Not true, of course, but definitely worth mentioning for the laugh it gave me.

However, the truth can be found in some of the more serious reviews. One user points to the fact that you can win real money playing this game, even though it is such a small amount. It’s so small that if you left your computer running with the game on, your electricity bill would probably exceed your income.

There is one final theory. Perhaps, in our world of constant overstimulation, the humble banana offers a brief moment of ultimate simplicity. A moment in which all your worries melt away and the only important thing left in the universe is to click that banana.

We may never know the truth, but if you’ll excuse me, I have a banana to click. Long live the clickable banana!
