Roblox is aging with a big jump in 13 and over player base
Roblox is seeing a significant change in its player base, with a notable increase in older users. During the 2024 Roblox Developer Conference (RDC), the company revealed that 58% of its 79.5 million daily active users are now 13 or older. This marks a 26% year-over-year increase for that age group in Q2 2024, which is a significant shift in the demographics of the platform.
The CEO of Roblox, David Baszucki, emphasized in a news how this growing age group is shaping the future of the platform. “When Erik Cassel and I founded Roblox in 2006, we were motivated by a question that still drives the company today: How do people connect through play?” Baszucki highlighted the company’s dedication to expanding globally, creating experiences for all age groups, and growing Roblox’s in-game economy.
This isn’t the first time Roblox has reported an increase in older users. In 2023it announced that 55% of its users were over the age of 13, with its fastest growing segment being the 17-24 demographic. Now, with the 13+ player base making up more than half of the platform, Roblox is redoubling efforts to serve this audience.
One of the new features developed for Roblox for this older demographic is Roblox Party, a tool designed to facilitate group play and communication. Party will allow users ages 9 and older to group together and explore their favorite Roblox experiences together. For users 13 and older with phone-controlled accounts, Party will also introduce voice chat, allowing more communication both in and out of game experiences. The text chat is expected to appear before the end of the year, with voice chat to follow shortly.
As Roblox grows, it’s clear that the platform is moving beyond its reputation as a children’s gaming platform. Whether it’s for gaming, socializing, or working on creative projects, Roblox evolves, and its audience evolves with it.
