Your formation has three main groups: forward, rear and support. The front units are usually tanks and damage dealers, while the units in the back usually heal, check status alignments, and attack from a distance. Below is the formation that has proven to be the best for Proving Grounds in my playtime.

You can place three units in the first line, and their placement is important. The mid unit usually takes the most damage, so the front mid slot goes to Yuthus. This shield-carrying guy is a great tank unit, but he can also jump in and protect other vanguards from attacks.

The side slots are reserved for the two mandatory characters for this part of the game. The top slot goes to our protagonist, Now. He is a well-rounded character, but his greatest quality is his ability to combine powers with other characters. The other side slot goes to Garo, a humanoid kangaroo with a giant sword and an Australian accent. He is a tough, damage unit, similar to Garr.

Marisa is one of the three mandatory characters for Proving Grounds, and she is a Guardian, like Garoo. She is a great support unit that can heal but also deal solid damage with her Rune Lens and melee attacks. Marisa takes the center position because she is the most durable of the three.

Francesca is a great asset to any formation as she is a combination of melee and healer. She can heal entire parties and unleash devastating combos on enemy units. She's not very good at taking damage though, so we put her on the top side.

Finally, it is Kurot with his trusty crossbow. He's a great ranged unit, but when equipped with the right Rune, he can also heal allies in trouble. Kuroto's position is in the lower side because he often stands on the higher ground, which improves his accuracy.

The best Support unit for Proving Grounds is cassandra, the elven lady innkeeper. Despite not giving any bonuses in gathering resources, Cassandra is extremely useful. When you have her in your party, you can change formation at any save point instead of going to the inn.
