GTA Trilogy Remasters Will Leave Netflix Just Days After Major Update

GTA Trilogy remastered will soon leave Netflix according to the company’s app, Apple App Store and Google Play Store. A date has been set for the partial removal of the collection. This might come as a bit of a surprise to fans for a variety of reasons.

Just this week a major update brought improvements from these mobile ports to the PC and console versions. The ports made for mobile included several improvements over the earlier console and PC equivalents such as a “Classic Lighting” option. This feature and a few more fixes came in this huge update, which you can see here.

Since the successful launch on mobile last year, fans have been asking Rockstar to bring these changes to PC and console. They did just that and the GTA Trilogy was the talk of the town this week. In addition, the GTA Trilogy has been downloaded over 36 million times with Netflix very pleased with its performance.

Exiting Netflix But Not Mobile

It’s been almost 12 months since Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy — The Definitive Edition came to mobile via Netflix. It’s hard to believe they’ve been on mobile for a year when we’ve gone 2 full years of radio silence and seen delays.

Now, Netflix has included its app as seen by What’s on Netflix and in the lists of App Store and Play Store of the game and GTA Vice City and GTA III leave Netflix. This means that the license has expired and there is no extension.

If you want to continue playing these games on mobile, you will have to buy them because your Netflix subscription is no longer enough. Each of the 3 games costs $19.99 / £18.99 / €19.99 on their own.

While the two app store listings don’t include a date, looking at the Netflix app shows the last day to play. It’s Friday December 13th for both GTA Vice City and GTA III. So you have a month to keep playing.

GTA San Andreas Remains

Interestingly, GTA San Andreas is omitted from the outgoing messaging. This suggests a license extension for Netflix to keep it for subscribers. After all, GTA San Andreas was by far the most popular of the three games. At their last count in September, GTA SA accounted for more than 25 million of the 36m total. Impressive stuff. We’ll have to wait and see if/when GTA San Andreas follows the others from Netflix or if Vice City and III will return.
