Halberdier is the fourth specialization option available for Spearman in Wartales. It only becomes available after you have completed the An Eye for an Eye search which you can start in the church in Cortia (see map above) in the District of Arthes.

To complete this quest, you must first fight through all the opponents inside Arthes Port Arena. You will find the arena by walking through Shipwreck Cave and you don't need the quest before you face the arena. After you've defeated everyone in the arena, go to the church and talk to the NPCs there to teach this special option.

My favorite Halberdier build creates a great support unit that can boost allies while dishing out big damage. They are mobile and can easily retreat from combat without penalty, helping them move into the best strategic sand position.

level Capable Name Description
2 Valuable Support (Passive) Each time this unit ends its turn next to an ally and is not engaged in combat, you gain 1 Healing Point.
3 Halberdier This specialty allows you to wear medium armor, as with all Spearman specialties. You get the Controlled Whirlwind an ability (cost 1 Value Point to use) that damages all units in an area around the unit and knocks them back 2 meters. The damage is greatly increased for each unit in the target area.
5 Inspired Presence (Passive) At the end of that unit's turn, they grant Deflection (damage taken by the next attack reduced by 70 percent) to all adjacent allies who are engaged in combat.
8 Readiness (Passive) If the unit ends its turn while not engaged in combat it gains Fury (the damage of their next attack is increased by 50 percent).
10 Unstoppable (Passive) The unit can pass through enemy units during its movement.
12 Class Specialization This allows you to pick up an earlier skill that you skipped. I suggest Greed: This unit has a 35 percent chance to dodge all ranged and AOE attacks.

How to play Halberdier in Wartales

The key to making the Halberdier work well is the flexibility you will get from it starting his turn disengaged. This becomes much easier when you get Unstoppable at level 10. Before then, with a good investment in movement, you should still be able to put yourself out of harm's way (preferably behind some tanks). This will allow you and your allies to benefit Valuable Support, Inspired Presenceand Readiness.

At the start of your turn, move to a position in the middle of a group of enemies (if possible) and use Controlled Whirlwind to do some damage. Move close (but not adjacent to an enemy that is on the way to where you want to end the turn) and use your standard attack on them (along with any weapon skills), and then approach allies to sand them with your passives.

Best Halberdier Equipment in Wartales

There are two great Legendary Weapons that you can pick up on your travels that are perfect for any Halberdist.

  • The Spear of Belerion: All standard attacks apply Destabilization to the targets for 1 Round. This reduces their Guard to 0, and so is great for making well armored units vulnerable. Available as part of the Belerion Archipelago story quest.
  • The Partisan of Huroun: Hits add Marks to the targets, either allowing an Attack of Opportunity (Mark of Narses) or gaining your part 2 Valor Points (Mark of Horoun). Since you'll be hitting multiple targets whenever possible, this is a strong choice. Available from Ludern Tomb.
  • deliverer: This makes standard attacks force opponents to disengage. It is probably best suited to other Spearman specializations, but it has the advantage of being relatively easy to obtain. Available after defeating Tracker Bionn in Ludern.

Best Halberdist Attributes in Wartales

As part of the Spearman class, the Halberdier can ignore Dexterity (mostly used to increase damage) and focus on the other stats.

  1. strength: Each point of Strength they take will add more bite to their Controlled Whirlwind attack, as well as any other damage they deal. It also increases their Critical Damage.
  2. movement: The key to a Halberdist's success is being in the right spot to deal damage, and then moving to a great spot to boost allies at the end of their turn. The more they can move, the more effective they will be.
  3. Constitution: Constitution adds Health Points so keep it as high as you feel is necessary for your level. They should be able to avoid most damage but must have enough health to survive a heavy DPS attack. Their Constitution also raises Carrying Capacity which is never a bad thing for the party.
  4. Willpower: Edge this up to 15 relatively quickly as possible as this allows them to survive the first time they would die in combat. It also prevents them from running into encounters with Nightmares.
  5. Critical Hit: I don't focus on crits with Halberdier, but it's a valid strategy. Once you're in bigger fights you should be able to target multiple enemies often, so more hits means more chances of crits.
