Developer Arrowhead Game Studios has announced that players of Helldivers 2 on PC will need to link their PSN accounts on May 6, 2024.
The news comes via a blog post on the Helldivers 2 Steam page, which was also shared by the Helldivers 2 X (formerly known as Twitter) account. When Helldivers 2 first launched, PlayStation Network account linking was temporarily optional due to technical issues. However, this grace period is due to end on May 6, with Sony Interactive Entertainment citing the critical role of account linking “in protecting our players and upholding the values of safety and security provided in PlayStation and PlayStation Studios games .” You can read the statement in full below.
Existing Helldivers 2 players on Steam will start seeing a mandatory login screen from May 30th and will need to have a Steam and PlayStation Network account linked by June 4th. All new players from May 3 will be required to link their two accounts before they. can start playing.
As expected, the news was not taken well by PC gamers. In response to the post about X, some said they would refuse to link their accounts, and others pointed out that they don't have a PlayStation console and don't want to create an account they'll never use. Others, like @JigsawGeneral assume the community's sentiment by simply saying “This is not a good idea.”
Other players, like @ItsYeshalot pointed out that this is not a new concept. “You need an Xbox account to play Halo on Steam. You need a Blizzard account to play OW2/D4 on Steam. This is not a new concept.” They also noted that this has been a requirement for the game since launch, and that it was made clear after launching the game for the first time that this would later be required. It might be an unpopular decision, but some would argue that the signs were there.
