Performance improvements are rolling out for Gray Zone Warfare, more on the way
Gray Zone Warfare's recent Early Access release received widespread criticism regarding the game's overall performance. Fortunately, developer Madfinger Games has begun its campaign to squash these issues as they arise.
Users on the game's official Steam forum are particularly unhappy with the game's various issues, with user LoboDoMar stating, “I can barely get 30 FPS, and the game hangs for 20 seconds every time I move in the landscape.” He has RTX 3080 TI with I7-4770k @ 3.5Ghz and 32GB RAM, which exceeds the minimum recommendation of Gray Zone Warfare. Such comments are common on the game's official Discord and Steam discussion forums, and as someone with a system with slightly higher specs than this, I can attest to having similar issues while playing.
Madfinger Games has no plans to leave things as they are, as the company has already officially released a hotfix to try and counter the ongoing performance issues. Although minor in scope, Hotfix 1 made some changes to how FSR works for graphics cards lacking DLSS Frame generation support. Additionally, it states that it “improved anti-aliasing quality for FSR, focusing on boosting performance.”
While many players have expressed gratitude for the FSR fix, some are expressing the opposite, with the heating making their performance worse. On the official Gray Zone Warfare Discord server, user NaturalBornSina says he “dropped from 130 (Frames Per Second) to like 90 FPS” after the FSR hotfix update. Another user, “I.Vee” on Discord says that he “started to crash on FSR, but the FPS is much better” compared to DLSS following the FSR ranker.
According to Madfinger Games' pinned tweet on X (formally known as Twitter), Hotfix 1 is one of many as the game continues to update to a 1.0 release. They mentioned that they are well aware of the performance issues plaguing the game and future fixes will come as development continues. While there's no other official word on when these performance fixes will arrive, I suspect they'll arrive sooner rather than later, albeit over an extended period rather than all at once.
The Gray Zone Warfare situation is not uncommon in today's video game climate. Despite development tools being more complex and saturated than ever, performance issues plague the industry at all levels, although indie titles tend to be less common for them. However, Gray Zone Warfare is not blocked by this apparently new standard, and Madfinger Games will have to work hard to turn the title's 'Mixed' rating on Steam (mostly due to performance issues) into something more positive in the future.
