Scar’s costume was censored in the Wuthering Waves update and fans are not happy
Despite its astronomical popularity at launch, Wuthering Waves has not been without its fair share of constructive criticism, but the strangest of all has to be, of all things, Scar’s costume. In fact, it’s getting to the point where the beloved antagonist’s wardrobe is effectively censored out of nowhere in the game’s latest update, and a ton of players aren’t having it.
Why was Scar’s costume censored in Wuthering Waves
The apparent reason for Scar’s outfit (old version seen below) getting the censor hammer was due to an overwhelming reaction from the CN region of the Wuthering Waves community. Specifically, a striped design feature in the suit’s abdominal region was criticized for being inappropriate, and Chinese players demanded that it be removed.
Amidst the outcry, the feature was jokingly dubbed by many players as Scar’s “onigiri deficiency”. Due to the very loose translation of this Japanese sentence, we cannot reveal it here. However, by now you probably get the picture.
When the 1.0.19 patch for Wuthering Waves dropped, the cosmetic change was surprisingly not mentioned in the patch notes, meaning it was meant to be seen, no pun intended. So when returning players later encountered Scar during the game, he was instead found wearing an altered version of his outfit.
Rather than a full-length bodysuit, Scar’s wardrobe is now a weird-looking shirt-pants situation that frankly doesn’t look all that menacing or all that cool. It also seems that some of Scar’s fans are not happy about this last-second change to his appearance, especially considering that the costume has remained unchanged in all promotional images of the game and even the closed beta.
As expected, players took to Reddit to voice their opinions on this unexpected change to one of the game’s most popular characters. Overall, the blame seems pretty evenly split between the Wuthering Waves CN community and the developers themselves for caving to the pressure. Granted, the CN region makes up about a quarter of Wuthering Waves’ total player base, so perhaps it’s not entirely surprising.
Either way, fans in western regions are not happy with the change to Scar’s appearance. Reddit user “dieorelse” claimed it was “expected” because “CN absolutely hated his design”. Others noted that the original body suit was pretty reminiscent of a Gundam pilot and that such a change was a disappointment.
As if that wasn’t enough, someone even took the time and effort to write an actual one fan fiction to satirically lament the loss of Scar’s “onigiry”. Ironically, it all rings deafeningly loud after Stellar Blade’s own censorship debacle following the game’s release in late April, despite still having a literal Skin suit in the game.
There’s a lot to criticize about Wuthering Waves, from its surface-level storytelling to its thematic identity crisis and the overall gameplay still not feeling quite polished. However, shaming Scar’s outfit into censorious oblivion was definitely a left-field choice we didn’t expect.
