SEGA finally acknowledges Black Doom lore in a recent Sonic x Shadow Generations trailer

After years of pretending Shadow The Hedgehog (2005) didn’t exist, imagine the shock of last week’s Sonic x Shadow Generations trailer. Not only do we get Black Doom as the main villain of the remastered game, but we also see the reappearance of the Black Arms and related transformations for Shadow.

Shadow the Hedgehog embraces his Black Arms genetics in Sonic Generations remastered

SEGA showed off a new trailer for Sonic x Shadow Generations during Summer Game Fest. It showed off a lot of things we already knew about the game, like completely remastered graphics and a separate Shadow campaign. But fans weren’t ready for the ultimate life form to grow alien wings.

Those wings are a form of mutation of the Black Arms DNA Gerald Robotnik collected from Black Doom, the leader of an alien species that once tried to conquer the Earth in Shadow The Hedgehog (2005). That used to be the last and only time SEGA touched that part of Shadow’s history until Generations remastered.

“I will overcome every obstacle with this power!”

And while Shadow hasn’t really accepted his alien DNA back into his game, it seems like he has now.

Black Doom was also implied as the villain of his campaign – a great nod to the fact that characters in Sonic Generations were seen to face formidable opponents and enemies that they defeated in the past. It’s actually a wonder why Black Doom wasn’t present in the original game.

Sonic x Shadow Generations will also feature more than a new campaign. Based on the trailer, it looks like we’re getting an Open Zone hub world as well as the return of the Chao.

Sonic x Shadow Generations will be released on October 25th. Those who pre-ordered the game will receive the following:

  • Gerald Robotnik’s journal detailing Shadow’s Creation
  • Skin “Legacy” from Sonic The Hedgehog Adventure
