You can upgrade fours to fives, but only do so to help your fives evolve, because everyone the best monsters in Summoners War start as 5 star monsters.

Although there are many types of battles in Summoners Wars, I have separated the best 5-star monsters into two categories below. Akhamamir (Wind Ifrit)

Akhamamir is only available through the Guild Shop. It's a fantastic monster for those who want to attack fast and hard, starting with its Speed-Up leader ability. It also has an AOE stun, along with scaling damage (based on HP and debuffs) and additional POINTS. I guess it should come as no surprise that wind ifrit is a veritable whirlwind! Raise its Speed and Attack as much as possible with Runes to reach its maximum damage potential.

Elsharion (Light Ifrit)

Elsharion can only be purchased in the Ancient Coin Magic Shop. Its main strength is taking buffs from your enemies and giving them to your monsters during battle. Both of its specials can cause Defense Break, while simply having it on your team will discourage attackers from inserting monsters like Theomars and Chloe (which rely on buffing). Elsharion works well even before its abilities are buffed, but you may have to work hard to keep it alive without a great set of defensive Runes.

Jeanne (Light Paladin)

Jeanne can only be obtained using Monster Fusion but is worth the effort as it is generally considered to be the best defensive PVP monster in the game. It has a very strong Guild leadership ability, increasing allied Resistance by 55 percent. Jeanne's Provoke ability and all-around tank strength (very high defense and HP) make it a perfect monster for defense teams, which is further boosted with Heal on its basic attack.

Tessario (Fire Ifrit)

Tessario is only available through the Guild Shop. One of its biggest advantages is being able to deal with Theomars (below), as its passive negates other passives on the opposing team. This is worth adding to any team that faces strong passives, but Tesarion also puts out solid damage. Another advantage is that its abilities don't need to be maxed out for it to be effective in battle.

Thoemars (Water Ifrit)

Theomars are only available through the Guild Shop. Its key ability is a passive that always gives it Elemental Advantage, meaning no attacking team can plan for it and it always reduces damage taken. Add in that this passive also makes Theomars immune to death (for one turn) and you have quite the defensive ability! If you have a good healer on your team, Theomars become incredibly hard to take down.

Dark Homonculus (Unbalanced Field)

A Dark Homonculus can only be obtained through crafting (which unlocks at level 19) using Crystals from Rift dungeons. It's one of the most sought-after monsters for PVP offensive teams, but you have to do the work to fully skill it before it's a true S-tier monster. You then have an awesome support monster thanks to its skill cooldown increase and speed ability decrease. Dark Homonculus also strips buffs from enemies, quickly reducing them to easy targets who can only use basic attacks.

Sigmarus (Water Phoenix)

Sigmarus can only be obtained using Monster Fusion but the effort is worth it as many see it as the best PVE monster in the game. It has some negatives, being quite slow and low on HP. But its offensive abilities more than cover this thanks to massive AOE nuking abilities, peak leadership ability (+44 percent HP for all allies in dungeons), and Freeze AOE. Throw in a very powerful basic attack, and you have a monster built to clear dungeons quickly.

Veremos (Dark Ifrit)

Verems can only be obtained using Monster Fusion. It does HP scaling damage which is great against boss mobs with high HP. Its boss credentials are boosted by doing good DOT damage, while stuns are an additional and powerful bonus. Veremos also holds up well under fire thanks to its strong defensive capabilities. Veremos is also popular in PVP teams thanks to his ability to counter Jeanne's powerful Provoke ability (see above) with his passive Convert ability.

Aquatic Homonculus (Ice Mist)

Water Homonculus can only be obtained by crafting using Crystals from Rift dungeons. You have to have it fully skilled for it to be effective. Once it is, you'll have one of the best crown control monsters in Summoners War thanks to it having both Stun and Freeze abilities, while all of its attacks are AOE. It's also a flexible monster, as it can be built as a support (focus on Accuracy) or as straight DPS (go for damaging Runes). Just to round things off, Water Homonculus automatically revives on death for a turn.

Xiong Fei (Fiery Panda Warrior)

Xiong Fei can only be obtained using Monster Fusion. While not the strongest monster, it is great in early and mid game PVE content and still has a role to play in the late game. On the contrary, it is a slow monster that needs time to build up strength. In the plus column, it can take the penalty because it works very much like a tank, having high HP and Defense. Its skill is packed with debuffs including decreasing enemy attack speed, breaking its defense and helping allies with AOE cleanup.
