News about Nintendo Switch 2 is coming soon, but not in the June Nintendo Direct

An announcement about the successor to the Nintendo Switch is coming in the current fiscal year, but it won't happen at next month's Nintendo Direct, Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa announced.

The news came via a tweet from the official Nintendo Japan X (formerly known as Twitter) account. In it, Furukawa states that “an announcement about the successor to the Nintendo Switch” will be made “within this fiscal year.” That means we should have some news about the Nintendo Switch 2 before March 31, 2025.

Any hope that we'd get our first glimpse of Nintendo's next-gen hardware next month was dashed in the same post. “We will be holding a Nintendo Direct this June about Nintendo Switch software for the latter half of 2024, but please be aware that there will be no mention of the Nintendo Switch successor during that presentation.

Reports from Bloomberg earlier this year stated that the Nintendo Switch 2 has been delayed until March 2025, initially scheduled to release before the end of 2024. Rumors as early as last week also suggested that the Joy-Cons of the Switch 2 would use magnetic technology to connect to the screen and main piece of hardware, rather than using the “rails” system of the current hardware. Old Joy-Con and Pro Controllers would also work with the new device, and both physical and digital Nintendo Switch games would work on the Switch 2.

It looks like we won't have to wait too much longer to see if all these rumors are true or not. What are you hoping for with the Nintendo Switch 2? Let us know in the comments below.
